If there is one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a gamer through and through. I have been enthralled with gaming since I was a child and even though I’m pushing my thirties, I don’t plan to stop gaming for a long, long time. We are now in Autumn of 2019 and a load of exciting new games are about to be released into the wild. I feel like a kid at Christmas again!
The Nintendo Switch, It’s just over 2 years old now and I have been in love with it ever since its release. Thanks to its portability, I can game whenever and wherever I want. It’s a great device which is rivaling the powerhouses that are Xbox and PlayStation with an abundance of upcoming games, all looking to be best sellers for Nintendo.
So let’s talk about some of those games shall we!
There are three Nintendo games coming out by the end of this year, one of which is releasing tomorrow: the critically acclaimed ‘The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening‘. If you have read my previous blogs, you already know I’m a huge Zelda fan. It’s quite easy for me to express how excited I am to play Link’s Awakening as it’s one of the few Zelda games I never finished. From what I have seen in the trailers, it looks like it is going to be a truly nostalgic experience mixed with modern graphics. If you are unfamiliar with this particular Zelda game then let me summarize.
With the majority of Zelda games set in the land of Hyrule, this one is set on a mysterious island known as Koholint which is isolated from the rest of the world. This story takes place after the events of ‘A Link to the Past’. The hero Link (You) is travelling by boat to explore the far reaches of the world to become stronger to overcome deadly threats, but during his voyage, Links boat is destroyed and washes ashore on Koholint island.
Link is then found by a girl named Marin who is deeply fascinated by Link and the outside world. After Link awakens and meets various memorable characters, he discovers he must wake the Wind Fish, Koholint’s Guardian, in order to return home. Link’s quest to wake up the Wind Fish will have him venture through numerous dungeons scattered across the island. Solve perplexing puzzles, outwit tricky traps, and battle fearsome monsters that dwell on the land.
Its truly unique art style looks right at home on the Nintendo Switch. I mean, lets just appreciate how adorable Link and Marin look! It takes me back to my childhood days when I would play on my Gameboy and SNES. I would get drawn into these incredibly detailed worlds and have so much fun with them. I am going to have the biggest smile on my face while playing this, that’s for sure!
Nintendo are also releasing a new Link Amiibo alongside the game which I will also be getting. This little guy adds more of a challenge to your game I believe, but we’ll find out more once the game is out.
I do want to say, before I continue, I plan to review Link’s Awakening when I have finished it as I want to keep improving my writing, so be ready for it!
The next big release for Nintendo Switch is the highly anticipated ‘Luigi’s Mansion 3‘ which will be releasing on October 31st, which is just in time for Halloween!
I am a big fan of horror games and although Luigi’s Mansion isn’t a scary game, it looks to be a full realization of horror for kids. Nintendo looks to make it the best version of the franchise yet!
The story is about Luigi embarking on a dream vacation with Mario and his friends upon receiving an invitation to a luxurious hotel. However, their dreams quickly turn into nightmares as King Boo reveals everything had been a ploy to capture Mario and his friends.
So with the assistance of Professor E. Gadd (great name by the way) once again, our cowardly hero Luigi traverses up and down treacherous floors of the now-ominous hotel on a quest to save his friends.
This time around, Luigi has more tools and abilities at his disposal compared to the other installments, including a newly upgraded Poltergust G-00 to slam and blow away fiendish ghosts. You can even summon an all-green gooey companion named Gooigi to assist in solving puzzles and overcoming obstacles. Furthermore, if you don’t wish to face the haunted halls by yourself, you can grab a friend and take control of both Luigi and Gooigi.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 looks to be a lot of scary fun for both kids and adults and a much welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch. I eagerly await its release on Halloween this year!
The final game I am most excited for is none other than the next installment of Pokemon on November 15th. There are two versions of the game which are entitled Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.
This is a whole new Pokemon RPG adventure with returning Pokemon as well as new ones to discover in a region clearly inspired by the United Kingdom. Looking at the pictures and video footage shown by Nintendo, it certainly looks very British to me.
As you the player, you set off your adventure in Galar, an expansive region with diverse environments, ranging from peaceful countrysides, bustling cities, deep forests and snow-covered mountains.
Like previous games, your main objective is to ‘Catch em all’, battle gym leaders and become the champion of Galar, but of course, you won’t be alone. You get to choose one of three different Pokemon to have alongside you on your adventure.
Grookey, the grass type chimp Pokemon, is mischievous and full of curiosity.
Scorbunny, the fire type bunny Pokemon, is very energetic and loves to run about.
Sobble, the water type lizard Pokemon, who uses its camouflage to hide and stealth attack in water.
In my opinion, I will be choosing Grookey as it seems the most unique of the three and I do love monkeys. However, I’m sure I will try all three at some point.
A new addition to the Pokemon battle formula is Dynamax, where Pokémon can take on a gigantic appearance during battle, which increases their power and abilities. It will surely add new strategies for Pokemon trainers when battling against each other. Who doesn’t want a giant Pikachu on their team?
Included in the Galar region are some new open world areas known as the ‘Wild Areas’ which are vast expanses of land containing untamed Pokemon. Unlike the rest of the game, you can see the wild Pokemon roaming around as you explore these areas, just like in Pokemon Let’s go Pikachu and Eevee.
With every new Pokemon game come new Legendary Pokemon and these ones have an awesome, epic design.
For owners of Pokemon Sword, they will be able to capture Zacian, the sword wielding wolf, and for owners of Pokemon Shield, they will be able to capture Zamazenta, the shield wielding wolf. These legendaries are shrouded in mystery but their purpose will become clear as we progress through the story.
Both Izzy and I will be getting the new Pokemon games. I will be getting Pokemon Sword whilst she will be getting Pokemon Shield so we can trade the game exclusives to each other to complete our Pokedexes. We have both played Pokemon games since we were kids so we are very excited to see what new changes and Pokemon await us in this next installment.
So those are my top three upcoming Nintendo Switch games coming out this year. There are plenty more games coming out this year but I am very happy to see the Switch releasing all these great exclusives. Nintendo has already had an excellent year so far with the likes of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Astral Chain, Super Mario Maker 2 and many more. The Switch is becoming a true powerhouse of superb titles and doesn’t look to slow down anytime soon.
I hope you enjoyed reading and hope to see you in my next blog!
